If you’re a web or graphic designer, chances are you’ve had to deal with tints of colors at some point in your career. A tint is simply a lighter version of a color, made by adding white to it. For example, if you add white to any pure hue, you will get a lighter tint of that hue. Tints are often used in design to create a sense of lightness and airiness.
In this tutorial, we’re going to show you how to create a tint swatch in Adobe Illustrator. We’ll also share some useful tips on working with tints in design. Let’s get started!
What is a Tint Swatch?
A Tint Swatch is a global color swatch in Adobe Illustrator which can be applied to any object. When you change the color of the Tint Swatch, all objects that are using that Tint Swatch will change to the new color automatically. This is a great way to quickly update the colors of your design.
To create a Tint Swatch, first select the object that you want to use as the base color. Then go to Edit > Edit Colors > Create New Global Color. This will open the New Global Color dialog box. In the dialog box, select “Tint” from the Type drop-down menu and then click OK.
Now that you have created your Tint Swatch, you can apply it to any object in your design simply by selecting the object and then clicking on the Tint Swatch in the Swatches panel. You can also change the color of the Tint Swatch by double-clicking on it in the Swatches panel. This will open the Edit Global Color dialog box where you can select a new color from the Color Picker.

This will open the Color Picker window. Select the “Tint” option from the drop-down menu and enter a percentage value between 0% and 100%. Click “OK” to close the Color Picker window. Your new tint swatch will appear in the Swatches panel.
Tips and Tricks
If you work with tints a lot, you know that it can be time-consuming to make a new swatch for each one. Luckily, there’s a way to streamline the process in Adobe Illustrator. Here’s a quick tip on how to make a tint swatch in Illustrator.
First, open the Swatches panel. Next, click on the New Swatch icon at the bottom of the panel. In the New Swatch dialog box, choose Tint from the Type menu. Enter a percentage value for the tint in the Tint field (I usually use 50%). Then click OK.
Now all you have to do is select the object you want to tint and click on your new swatch in the Swatches panel. Voila! The object will be tinted with your specified color.
You’re not able to see the color of the tint you’re trying to make in your Illustrator document. The problem could be that your document is in RGB color mode and you’re viewing it on a monitor that is not color-calibrated. To fix this, change the color mode of your document to CMYK.
Now you know how to make a tint swatch in Adobe Illustrator! This method is great for when you want to match colors from another design or from real life. You can also use it to create custom color schemes for your next project.
