Introduction
In this tutorial, we’re going to show you how to create a stipple brush in Adobe Illustrator. We’ll be using a texture file to create our brush, but you can use any image you want. Once we have our brush created, we’ll use it to create a simple illustration.
What You’ll Need
In order to create a stipple brush in Illustrator, you’ll need a few basic supplies. You’ll need a sheet of Bristol board, some black acrylic paint, a small paintbrush, and a piece of tape.
Creating the perfect stipple brush can take some practice, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be able to create beautiful works of art.
Making the Stipple Brush
To make the stipple brush, we first need to create a new art brush. Select the ellipse tool and draw a small circle. With the circle selected, go to Window > Brushes and click on the “New Brush” icon at the bottom of the panel. In the New Brush dialog box, select “Art Brush” from the Type drop-down menu and click OK.
In the Art Brush Options dialog box, give your brush a name and make sure that the Direction option is set to “Down”. This will ensure that when you paint with your brush, the circles are oriented in the same direction. Underneath the Scale options, set both width and height to 5%. This will ensure that our circles stay nice and small when we paint with our brush. Click OK to close the dialog box.
Next, we need to adjust our brush options so that our stipple brush doesn’t look too uniform. With your new art brush selected, go back to Window > Brushes and click on the “Brush Options” icon at the bottom of the panel. In the Art Brush Options dialog box, select “Scatter” from the Method drop-down menu and enter a value of 500% in both axes under Count.(If you want your stipple brush to have more or less density, you can play around with this value until you get something that you like). Underneath Scatter, select “Placed” from the Control drop-down menu. This will ensure that our stipple brush is generated from a single point, rather than being scattered randomly.(If you want your stipple brush to have more randomness, you can select “Random” from this drop-down menu). Make sure that both “Tints” options are checked so that our stipple brush retains its color when we paint with it. Click OK to close the dialog box
Applying the Stipple Brush
It is easy to apply the stipple brush to a path. Just select the stipple brush tool and then click on the path. The stipple brush will automatically adjust its size, spacing, and other settings according to the path.
Tips and Tricks
Here are some tips and tricks for making a stipple brush in Illustrator:
1. Use a light touch when drawing your stipples. The heavier the pressure, the larger the dots will be.
2. Use a variety of sizes and shapes for your stipples. This will give your brush more texture and character.
3. Vary the opacity of your stipples. This will create a more natural look.
