How to combine two shapes in Illustrator
In Adobe Illustrator, you can use the Shape Builder tool to easily combine multiple overlapping shapes into one new shape. This is a great way to create complex shapes from simpler pieces. In this Illustrator tutorial, we’ll show you how to combine two shapes using the Shape Builder tool.
How to use the Shape Builder tool in Illustrator
The Shape Builder tool is a great way to quickly and easily combine shapes in Illustrator. In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to use the Shape Builder tool to combine two shapes into one.
First, we’ll create two simple shapes using the Rectangle Tool and the Ellipse Tool. Then, we’ll select both shapes and head over to the Shape Builder tool.
With theShape Builder tool selected, we’ll simply click and drag over the area where we want to combine the two shapes. You’ll see that the two shapes are combined into one shape.
You can also use the Shape Builder tool to delete parts of a shape or to add new parts to a shape. To do this, simply hold down the Alt key (Windows) or Option key (Mac) and click and drag over the area you want to delete or add.
How to use the Pen tool in Illustrator
Illustrator’s Pen tool is one of the most essential tools in the software. It allows you to create any shape you can imagine, limited only by your own imagination and skill. In this tutorial, we’re going to show you how to use the Pen tool to combine two shapes into one.
First, let’s create two simple shapes. We’ll use a circle and a square for this example. To create a circle, select the Ellipse tool from the Toolbar and click and drag on your canvas to create a circle. To create a square, select the Rectangle tool from the Toolbar and click and drag on your canvas to create a square.
Next, we need to choose which shape we want to use as our starting point. For this example, we’ll use the square as our starting point. Select thesquare with the Selection tool and then position it on top of the circle so that they overlap slightly.
Once you have your two shapes positioned how you want them, it’s time to start combining them into one shape using the Pen tool. To do this, select thePen tool from the Toolbar and then click on one of the anchor points of the square (this will be one of the small squares that appear around the edge of the shape when it is selected). Then, while holding down the Shift key, click on another anchor point ofthe square. Doing this will constrain your line so that it is perfectly horizontal or vertical.
Now that we have our first line drawn, we need to complete our new shape by clicking on an anchor point ofthe circle. You’ll notice that when you hover over an anchor point ofthe circle, a small curved line appears next to your cursor indicating that you can make a curved line. This is because we are using Bézier curves which allow us to make any kind of curved line imaginable (more on that later). For now, just know that we needto clickon an anchor pointof the circleand then drag our cursor in order tomove alongthe curveand placeour next pointexactly wherewe wantit.
Once you’ve clicked on an anchor point and placed your next point, you can continue drawing lines by clicking on other anchor points or by clicking and draggingto place points along curvesuntil you’ve completed your new shape. When you’re finished drawing your new shape, simply press Enter/Returnto exit outof draw modeand deselectyourshape. And thereyou haveit! You’ve successfullycombinedtwo shapesintoone usingthePentoolinIllustrator!
How to use the Eraser tool in Illustrator
In Adobe Illustrator, the Eraser tool functions just like a traditional eraser would. It removes portions of shapes so that you can create new shapes or adjust the overall look of your design.
To use the Eraser tool, simply select it from the Tools palette and then click and drag across the areas you want to remove. You can also click on an anchor point and drag it to another location to delete a portion of a path.
If you want to remove an entire object, simply select it with the Selection tool and press the Delete key.
How to use the Freeform Pen tool in Illustrator
In Adobe Illustrator, the Freeform Pen tool lets you draw paths as if you were drawing with pencil on paper. You can click to add Anchor points and drag to create curves. The Freeform Pen tool creates smooth curves and straight lines, as well as Corners.
To start drawing with the Freeform Pen tool, do one of the following:
-Select the Freeform Pen tool .
-Click theFreeform Pen tool in the Tools panel.
-Double-click another drawing tool, such as the Line Segment tool.
After you select a drawing tool, click where you want to start drawing. To add an anchor point, click again in the document. As you add anchor points, they appear connected by path segments. To create a curve, drag an anchor point.
How to use the Scissors tool in Illustrator
The Scissors tool in Illustrator allows you to cut any shape into two separate pieces. This can be useful for creating custom shapes or for dividing a complex shape into simpler parts.
To use the Scissors tool, simply click on the path that you want to cut. The Scissors tool will automatically create two new anchor points at the cursor position. You can then move the anchor points to adjust the shape of the cut.
Once you are happy with the shape, you can delete the unwanted part of the path using the Delete Anchor Point tool or by simply pressing Delete.
How to use the Knife tool in Illustrator
One of the most useful tools in Adobe Illustrator is the Knife tool. The Knife tool allows you to cut through objects to create interesting shapes and patterns. In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to use the Knife tool to combine two shapes in Illustrator.

Now, select both the rectangle and the ellipse using the Selection tool. Then, click on the “Cut” icon in the top toolbar. This will cut both shapes into separate pieces.
